My Motorola Droid battery life sucks ass!

I really don’t mean to talk so much about my damn droid as much as I do. This damn phone has been pissing me off severely lately, as readers may have noticed, the screen cracking.  But like all smartphones, the battery life is rather short.  This has been recently getting worse and worse.

Yesterday was opening day of rifle season, and I woke up at 4:00am; the first thing I grab is my phone to shut off the alarm, thus taking it off the charger.  note: 4am.  after a couple phone calls, text messages, our crew headed out to the huntin spot.  got in my tree at 6:45am, and sat, not touching my phone until maybe 9am.  a few gv-text* messages back and forth from my dad and luke who were also in the woods, and misty. that was it, and maybe opened a few email messages (yes hunting is boring sometimes), and a tried to get a pic of a piebald yearling (half albino).  no web browsing, no GPS, no wifi, no auto-brightness.  at 1:00pm, I got the 15% warning, and a few more gv-text messages and phone calls since luke shot a deer, couldn’t find it, and got lost… and I was now unable to communicate with my hunting party at 2:53pm.  not even 11 fucking hours of light use.

Luke showed me his iphone after tracking his deer, using many texts/calls/GPS/photos/email, and he was at 75%.  Now I know that this is comparing apples to oranges and whatnot… for example his phone is brand new, and mine is 6 months old, I use gmail and activesync, he uses gmail… blah blah blah.

Today, I woke up at 7:00am, went to the plant and while waiting/working on an industrial, I was searching for some “battery boost” app in the Android Market, and sent a couple texts back and force with misty and by 11:00am, my battery was half gone. This is getting ridiculous.

so, as a test, today In order to save some battery life, I have done the following:

  • Google Voice Stuff Note:the entire reason of me using this is for free unlimited text messages between Misty and I, since she is on AT&T.
    • uninstalled the Google Voice application from my droid.
    • set Push notification of SMS messages sent to my GV# to my droid’s actual phone  number, which is not free… because verizon wireless rapes people for simple services.
  • I decided to unblock the update the droid from FRG01B to FRG22D, thus loosing my root privileges on my phone.  I could have went another route to keep my root but got really freakin annoyed with this phone, and am about to give up.
  • Installed “Battery Booster”, configured it to use “Smart Battery Saver” with “low” security, which should kill idle tasks.

An interesting find:

Under Menu –> Settings –> Wireless & Networks –> Mobile Networks there is a checkbox for “Data Enabled”  When this button is checked off, SMS will still work, whereas MMS will not send.  everything else, in my example Gmail, facebook, activesync, whatever-else-may-be-hogging-network-resources-therefor-battery, will not function.  This, may be the key to keeping my goddamn battery for making it through a day of hunting.
