installing vmware server 2.0 on ubuntu 10.4 beta

Nobody i know seems to use vmware on ubuntu, but i will post this here, because i was having major problems compiling the vmware modules successfully using the latest beta of ubuntu. since i was using my pc as my media center, i forgot how much of a pain in the donkey it was to get vmware to work after every kernel upgrade being you have to run vmware-config.pl afterwards for the services to start. initial install was simple with these steps:

  • download vmware server 2.0 in tar.gz format
  • download this script to same folder (credits to “Ramon de Carvalho Valle”)
  • with root privileges, run ./vmware-server-2.0.x-kernel-2.6.3x-install.sh
  • proceed as normal.

worked for me, after hours of wasting my time 🙂
